Three areas of work. Each carries its own deadlines, and they usually start running before anyone calls a lawyer.

An injury leaves a record in several places at once: the incident report, the medical chart, the insurer’s file. We gather those records and deal with the insurer.

An injury at work sets two clocks running, one for notice to your employer and one for the claim itself. We watch both.

Line-of-duty injuries move through pension and disability boards on their own schedule. We prepare those filings and appear at the hearings.

Brian Millikan joined the St. Louis City police department in 1994 and left the force for law school at Saint Louis University. One minute, in his own words, on where the practice comes from.
About the attorney
Brian P. Millikan
Brian joined the St. Louis City police department in 1994 and worked both North and South St. Louis. After leaving the department he went to law school at Saint Louis University — then spent his early legal career defending insurance companies, so he has seen these cases from both sides of the table.
He opened this practice in 2006. Since then the work has been personal injury, workers’ compensation, and representing police officers and other first responders across the St. Louis area — handled in plain language, from the Kirkwood office. Clients come from across the region.

A St. Louis judge threw out the indictment of two officers after finding that prosecutors had deliberately kept a grand jury transcript from the defense.

A judge ruled that a former St. Louis officer acted lawfully and used objectively reasonable force in a 2017 arrest in which a man’s jaw was broken.

A judge ruled that prosecutors had not proved a former officer lacked probable cause to stop and search a man he believed he had seen in a drug deal.

Questions we hear
Does the first consultation cost anything?
The first consultation is free, and can be at the office, by phone or by video call. Personal injury and workers’ compensation claims, including first responders’ line-of-duty injuries, are handled on a contingency fee; for other matters, the fee is agreed case by case.
What should I bring to a first conversation?
Whatever exists — an incident report, claim paperwork, photos, a letter from an insurer. Rough is fine. Part of the job is finding the rest.
How long do I have to act?
It depends on the matter — and the clocks often start running before anyone calls a lawyer. Most injury claims must be filed within five years, some much sooner. Workers’ compensation carries its own notice deadlines, and line-of-duty matters move on the boards’ schedules. The safe answer is to ask early.
What if my matter isn’t something you handle?
We say so. We tell you where your case stands, what comes next, and when a matter belongs with someone else.
I’m a police officer, firefighter, paramedic or corrections officer. Is my situation different?
Often, yes. Pension and disability boards run on their own schedules and their own paperwork. Brian has represented police officers since law school, drawing on his own years on the force, and represents firefighters, EMS personnel and corrections officers too, throughout the St. Louis area — see first responder law.
